Description

The Painted Figure focuses on a range of color-related issues as they apply to painting the human figure. The class will work from a diverse group of models and cover mixing skin tones, color relationships, and massing light and dark shapes. We will progress from a limited to a full-color palette with an emphasis on the principles underlying color mixing. You’ll work through both single and extended poses across multiple sessions. We’ll look at classical and contemporary approaches to the figure, drawing inspiration from a range of artists and traditions.

This class will cover the following topics:

• color theory

• mixing warm and cool skin tones

• color value

• observing and reacting to environmental influences on skin tone

• pushing color choices beyond observational reality

• working on toned surfaces
