Description
The Painted Figure focuses on a range of color-related issues as they apply to painting the human figure. The class will work from a diverse group of models and cover mixing skin tones, color relationships, and massing light and dark shapes. We will progress from a limited to a full-color palette with an emphasis on the principles underlying color mixing. You’ll work through both single and extended poses across multiple sessions. We’ll look at classical and contemporary approaches to the figure, drawing inspiration from a range of artists and traditions.
This class will cover the following topics:
• color theory
• mixing warm and cool skin tones
• color value
• observing and reacting to environmental influences on skin tone
• pushing color choices beyond observational reality
• working on toned surfaces

LOCATION: Unless otherwise specified, all courses are hosted at Manifest's new facility at 'M1' in Clifton at 3464 Central Parkway (see map and directions below). Manifest's new facility provides multiple studio classrooms, private lesson space, a darkroom, a film processing room, a state of the art printmaking wing, and a multi-purpose lecture and class meeting space as well as on-site parking, grounds, and exterior spaces in which to relax, discuss, and make art. The studios are outfitted with professional equipment, furniture, and study aids.

Scott Ramming

About the Instructor
Scott Ramming is an artist living and producing work in the Madisonville neighborhood of Cincinnati. He received his BFA from Middle Tennessee State University and has taught painting at Mount Gretna School of Art. Within the Manifest ecosystem, Scott has served as a moderator for the Drawing Center’s Open Figure sessions for over eleven years and has shown at the gallery several times, including a two-person exhibition in 2021. Currently a Manifest Resident Instructor, Scott has a background in painting and drawing. He works from observation and imagination, utilizing the figure, landscapes, and still life. His practice is rooted in gestural intuition while maintaining a dialog with art history.
